This Memoir captures the reverberations of the struggle for India's Independence as they overtook the fortunes of the Bhimani family in Bombay.

The traumatic arrest and imprisonment of his mother in 1932 for picketing British goods spurs the son, Gaurav, to record the momentous events of the freedom movement in a magnum opus. But even as he writes he has to cope with his own life's vicissiitudes. The failure of the family business, gambling debts, and heavy drinking lead to the breakdown of his marriage with Lata, and he seeks refuge in the family's ancestral farm in Karla village.
