So how do write good dialogue?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Listen<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>To write a good dialogue, you need to be a good listener. Haven\u2019t you seen the artist with his sketch pad who sits at a caf\u00e9 and sketches people as they come and go?\u00a0A writer can also jot down interesting conversations in her notebook when she is at a caf\u00e9 or at a park. Eavesdropping is good!\u00a0<span style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">Watch plays and watch movies to understand contemporary lingo and how dialogues can sound natural.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Punctuate<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Dialogues need punctuation. You start and end the dialogue with double inverted commas.<\/p>\n<p>So, the dialogue can be,<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cStop eating my brains, Mom!\u201d she said in a feverish voice.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>or<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cThe fish jumped out of the glass bowl,\u201d the child said with tears in his eyes.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Note that the comma is placed inside the inverted commas.<\/p>\n<p>When you use an em-dash, it means that the conversation has been cut off.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cI swear I saw her yesterday night but\u2014\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Be Honest<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Dialogue is not so polite and well-trimmed. So a good writer would use profanities without hesitation and if the situation requires it.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tag your dialogue<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Who is saying what? If you have multiple dialogues in your story, it makes sense to mention who said what, each time; otherwise the reader could get confused and lose track.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Read Aloud<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Read your dialogues aloud. That\u2019s the best way to test if they work or not.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Avoid Dialect<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Unless you have the proficiency of a writer like Alice Walker or Manohar Shyam Joshi, avoid dialects as far as possible. To be able to write in dialect, you have to know it very well yourself. In his Hindi book,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.in\/Kuru-Swaha-Manohar-Shyam-Joshi\/dp\/8126708956\/ref=sr_1_5?s=books&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1467717681&amp;sr=1-5&amp;keywords=manohar+shyam+joshi\">Kuru Kuru Swaha<\/a>, Joshi writes in as many as six dialects of Hindi.
