The criteria for\u00a0this year&#8217;s\u00a0names is\u00a0that the author died in the calendar year 1957 and the work\u00a0was published before his death.\u00a0In case the work\u00a0was published after the author\u2019s death, it will only come out of copyright after 60 years from the date of publication.<\/p>\n<p>We have collected the data\u00a0from various sources including Wikipedia and other online sources, some which we will be linking here. The information provided is not foolproof, so if you notice any errors or are aware of other writers who died in 1957 and whose names have not been mentioned here, please let us know.<\/p>\n<p>When an author enters public domain, it means that most of his works are now free to be republished, translated, and converted to different formats. This way the long-gone author breathes life again and gains new readership. Help us in our quest to conserve our rich literary culture.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Bhai Vir Singh\u00a0<\/strong>(1872-1957)<\/h2>\n<p>This distinguished Punjabi poet is considered as the orchestrator of the Sikh literary Renaissance. He dabbled with lyrics when he was young and went on to invest his energies in pamphleteering. His work is a treatise on renunciation, piety\u00a0and\u00a0sacrifice.\u00a0<em>Rana Surat Singh<\/em>\u00a0is a famous poem he composed.\u00a0Vir Singh played an important part in the renewal of Punjabi literary tradition by merging it with ideas he picked up from English.\u00a0Some of his major creative works such as\u00a0<em>Sri Guru Nanak Chamatkar<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em>Sri Guru Kalgidhar Chamatkar<\/em>\u00a0were originally\u00a0serialized. He was an exponent of the romance and\u00a0philosophy; some of his books are\u00a0<em>Sundari<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Bijay Singh<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Satwant Kaur<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Subhagji\u00a0da Sudhar Hathin Baba Naudh Singh<\/em>. He also dabbled in shorter poems and lyrics.\u00a0He was\u00a0honored\u00a0with the Sahitya Akademi Award in 1955 and the Padma Bhushan Award in 1956. More about this prolific writer and creator of The Punjab &amp; Sind Bank <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Vir_Singh_(writer)\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Aleixo Clemente Messias Gomes\u00a0<\/strong>(1873-1957)<\/h2>\n<p>Better known as Prof. Messias Gomes,\u00a0this secondary school teacher, writer and Goan journalist was the author of several works on historical themes and co-founder of the daily O Heraldo, the first\u00a0daily\u00a0to be published in Portuguese India. More <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Aleixo_Clemente_Messias_Gomes\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Brajendra Kishore Roy Chowdhury\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0(1874-1957)<\/h2>\n<p>This Zamindar was\u00a0a patron\u00a0of the Indian national education movement and was also a renowned classical music maestro\u00a0who hailed from Gouripur, Bengal.\u00a0<em>Marxism and the Indian Ideal<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em>Indian Music &amp; Mian Tansen\u00a0<\/em>are two books by him.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Jagadish Gupta<\/strong>\u00a0(1886-1957)<\/h2>\n<p>An Indian poet, novelist and short story writer, Jagadish Gupta was one of the major exponents of modern Bengali literature. His style was original and he dealt with realistic and psychological themes. His stories and poems had been published in periodicals like\u00a0<em>Bharati<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Bijoli<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Uttara<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Kali-Kalam,\u00a0Prabasi, Bharatbarsha, Sonar Bangla<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em>Kallol<\/em>. Some of his other notable works include\u00a0<em>Asadhu\u00a0Siddhartha<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Kashyap o Surabhi,<\/em>\u00a0<em>Binodini<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Udaylekha<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Meghabrito Ashani<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Dulaler\u00a0Dola<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Nishedher Patabhumikay<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Loghu Guru<\/em>, etc. In 1954, the Government of India granted him a &#8216;Distinguished Man of Letters Allowance&#8217;. Read <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jagadish_Gupta\">this<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>S Shripad Mahadev Mate<\/strong>\u00a0(1886-1957)<\/h2>\n<p>Mate\u00a0was was a Marathi writer, educator and a social reformer from Maharashtra, India. The Dalits dubbed him Mahaar Mate as he worked against caste discrimination. Some of his works include\u00a0<em>Rasvanthichi Janm Katha<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Santh-Panth-Thanth<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Upekshithanche Antarang<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Parasuram Charitra<\/em>, etc. More details <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Shripad_Mahadev_Mate\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Karmegha Konar\u00a0<\/strong>(1889-1957)<\/h2>\n<p>Also known as Chennaa\u00a0Pulavar, Konar was a popular Tamil poet and educator.\u00a0He was the Chairman of the Tamil department at The American College in Madurai.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Narahari Dvarkadas Parikh<\/strong>\u00a0(1891-1957)<\/h2>\n<p>Parikh was a writer, Indian independence activist and social reformer from Gujarat, India. Influenced by Mahatma Gandhi, he was associated with Gandhian institutes throughout his life. He wrote biographies like\u00a0<em>Mahadevbhainu Purvacharit<\/em>\u00a0on Mahadev Desai,\u00a0<em>Sardar Vallabhbhai Part 1-2<\/em>\u00a0on Vallabhbhai Patel and<em>\u00a0Shreyarthini Sadhana<\/em>\u00a0on Kishorelal Mashruwal. He also edited works of his associates and translated some works.\u00a0<em>Manav\u00a0<\/em>Arthshastra is his work on human economics. His writings on economics education, politics and Gandhian thought include\u00a0<em>Manav\u00a0Arthshastra,\u00a0Samyavad<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em>Sarvoday<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Vardha Kelvanino Prayog<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Yantrani<\/em>\u00a0and<em>\u00a0Maryada<\/em>, etc. Read more about him <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Narhari_Parikh\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Venkata Krishna Rao, Bhavaraju\u00a0<\/strong>(1895- 1957)<\/h2>\n<p>He studied law, was the founder-secretary of the Andhra Historical Research Society and edited its journal. He organized the 900<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0celebration of the coronation of the King Raja Raja Narendra, patron of Telugu\u2019s best\u00a0adikavi. His publications include\u00a0<em>History of the Early Dynasties of the Andhradeshas<\/em>\u00a0(200-625 AD) and a sequel of this work called\u00a0<em>History of the Eastern Chalukyas of Vengi<\/em>, which was posthumously published by the Andhra Pradesh Sahitya Akademi. He wrote numerous historical monographs in Telugu including\u00a0<em>Rajaraja\u00a0Narendradu<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Prachina Andhranauka Jivanamu<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Andhradeshamuvidesha Yatrikulu<\/em>. Read an encyclopedic entry on him here.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Nanduri Venkata Subba Rao<\/strong>\u00a0(1895\u20131957)<\/h2>\n<p>This famous Telugu poet who\u00a0practised\u00a0law was the author of the famous work\u00a0<em>Yenki Patalu<\/em>\u00a0(an anthology of songs on a woman called Yenki) that ended up influencing eminent writers and thinkers like Adavi Bapiraju,\u00a0Sri Sri, Chalam, Devulapalli and Krishna Sastry. More <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nanduri_Venkata_Subba_Rao\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Ram Babu Saxena\u00a0<\/strong>(1897-1957)<\/h2>\n<p>This polyglot civil servant from Uttar Pradesh was learned in English, Persian and Urdu literature. He wrote a book in English called\u00a0<em>Modern Urdu Poetry<\/em>. Only the Urdu translation\u00a0of his work\u00a0<em>History of Literature<\/em>\u00a0by Muhammad Askari is available.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Bose Sunirmal\u00a0<\/strong>(1902-1957)<\/h2>\n<p>He was a pioneer of Bengali juvenile literature, his output consisting of poetry, rhymes, stories, drama, and travelogues. He wrote prolifically in journals of the time like\u00a0<em>Prabasi<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Sandesh<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Ramdhanu<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Alpana<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Kishor<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Asia,\u00a0<\/em>etc.\u00a0 Some of his books are\u00a0<em>Chhanabada<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Bade Maja<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Hai Chai<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Marener\u00a0Dak<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Sahure<\/em>, etc.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>J. Friend-Pereira\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0(1907-1957)<\/h2>\n<p>He was an Anglo-Indian academic and author.\u00a0 Some of his poetry publications include\u00a0<em>Mind&#8217;s Mirror<\/em>. He contributed to journals in India\u00a0like the Modern Review and the New Review, besides translating works on the Islamic philosopher Avicenna as well as poetry from French and Latin.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Bhuvaneshwar\u00a0<\/strong>(1910-1957)<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">He was a pioneer of the western style one-act play in Hindi and was heavily influenced by Ibsen, Shaw, Lawrence, Freud.\u00a0 His first piece\u00a0<em>Shyama (Ek Vaivahik Vidambana)<\/em>\u00a0was published in 1933. Some of his works includ<em>Shaitan<\/em>,\u00a0\u00a0<em>Ek Samyahin<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Samyavadi<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Pratibha ka\u00a0vivaah<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Rahsya\u00a0romanch<\/em>. He also wrote plays that dealt with other dimensions besides relationships such as\u00a0<em>Mrityu<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Hum Akele Nahin Hey<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Sava Ath Baje<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Strike<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Usar,<\/em>\u00a0<em>Roshni\u00a0aur\u00a0Aag<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Kathputlian,\u00a0<\/em><em>Photographer<\/em>\u00a0<em>ke\u00a0Saamne<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Tambe\u00a0ke\u00a0Kire<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Itihaas\u00a0ke\u00a0kenchul<\/em>, etc. His plays including\u00a0<em>Azadi ki Ninu<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Jerusalem<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Sikandar<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Akbar<\/em>, and\u00a0<em>Chengiz Khan<\/em>\u00a0have also dealt with historical themes.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Mahadevan or Devan<\/strong>\u00a0(1913-1957)<\/h2>\n<p>Devan is a popular Tamil writer, a veteran Charles Dickens of the south, known for his witty and humorous stories. He worked as a teacher and also as a sub-editor at Ananda Vikatan\u00a0That way Devan resembled Charles Dickens. He explored various genres of writing including the short story, novel, travelogue, drama\u00a0and\u00a0reporting. One of his novels,\u00a0<em>Justice Jagannathan<\/em>\u00a0has been translated into English. Some of his novels are\u00a0<em>Mythili<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Malathi<\/em>,\u00a0<em>CID Chandru<\/em>, etc. Unlike other authors, there are various commentaries on this author. <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Devan_(writer)\">Check out the wiki entry<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Bakulesh <\/strong>(1919-1957)<\/h2>\n<p>Bakulesh is the pen name of Ramji Arjun Gajkandh. Born in a Gujarati Kutchhi family, this journalist and writer composed stories about the common man. His style has been described as poetic and down to earth. Recently a collection of his short stories called <em>Bakuleshni Vartso<\/em> was published.\u00a0 Other works include <em>Kharan Pani<\/em> and <em>Kadavnan Kanku<\/em>.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Krishan Nair<\/strong> (?-1957)<\/h2>\n<p>He was a\u00a0Malayalam scholar and critic and author of <em>Kavya Jivitha Vrtti<\/em>(vols 1&amp; 2), a treatise on Indian poetics and commentaries of <em>attakathas<\/em>.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Lala Laxman<\/strong> (?- 1957)<\/h2>\n<p>This\u00a0satirist\u00a0was inspired by the writer and satirist Habibullah.
