About the Author

Bernardo Elvino de Sousa was born in Cottarbhat – Aldona, Goa, India on 13th August 1945 and did his early schooling at St. Thomas’ High School, Aldona and the latter three years at Loyola High School, Margão. After SSC, he joined St. Xavier’s College, Mumbai and obtained the B.Sc. (Hons) degree in chemistry (principal) and physics (subsidiary) from Bombay University. He completed his higher education with the title of Dr. of Natural Sciences (Dr. rer. nat.) from the University of Fribourg, Switzerland, with a thesis in organic photochemistry. After post-doctoral research in Fribourg with a Ciba-Geigy research grant, he joined Ciba-Geigy Ltd. in Basel, Switzerland as a research scientist in 1977 and retired from Huntsman Corporation in September 2010 as Director, Global Product EHS Management. During his 34 years serving the chemical industry, the author has held various executive positions notably in the areas of Product Safety and Quality Management. He has many scientific publications to his credit and post-retirement continues to be involved in Quality Management and Product Safety projects and as an auditor for Quality Management systems as well as a Lead Assessor for the Swiss Business Excellence Award.
He is married to historian Vinita née Veloso, from Badem – Salvador do Mundo, Goa, and they have two children, Ranjit and Savitri.
