Interview with Aban Sukhia

A short biography including the books your have published/self published.

Off late I'm a housewife, I work from home running a tiffin service to individuals and offices in Pune. My books are self explanatory.

What is your main occupation?

I have the toughest job in the world, I'm a mother and home maker. I don't get paid a salary for a 24/7 job

Tell us something about your self-published book(s)?

Mine are simple easy cook books designed to help one and all. The idea is cooking can be done by anyone of any age. Simple ingredients taste best, minimul fuss in cooking makes it enjoyable. Instructions are simple too.

In the age of easy e-publishing, what motivated you to write a book?

I'm an old fashioned bawa who still enjoys picking up a book and reading.

When/why did you think of self publishing?

I did'nt do it for the money as self publishing is expensive. I was more than happy to share my recipes and experiences. All my friends and relatives expected me to pen a couple of books too. They think my cooking is great too.

What are the pros and cons of self publishing from your experience?

No pros, its just a con job. All you need is to find a printer and then market the book by yourself. XXX* was a real let down, badly organised too. I had to hound them for book reviews and sales reports. Marketing hopeless. They hood winked me also. I got more mileage and sold far more books than they did on my lonesome. I also went for reprint without them

*[Pothi.com's note: The name of the player with whom she self published her book has been masked in accordance with Pothi.com's policy.]

How did you go about marketing and promoting your book?

I pulled favors from friends / librarys, attacked clubs, did my own book launches, scouted book stores and begged them to give me a chance. Calling up all my journalist pals etc.

As a self-publisher, what were the biggest challenges and what kind of support/services you would have liked to have?

A good PR team.

Any specific learning/advice you would like to share with other writers wanting to self-publish?

Be prepared to do maximum work yourself.

Your favourite online website for writers? (might be a social network community, mailing list, a writer's website etc.)

None really, I mainly use the net to keep in touch with my pals abroad.

Since when are you writing and what do you usually write on?

Since about a year, its just about cooking, running a tiffin business.

Which is your favourite book?

Always what I'm reading at the moment, HOW STARBUCKS SAVED MY LIFE by Michael Gill.

Who is your favourite author?

Thats a tie between John Grisham and Jeffery Archer

What are your hobbies?

Reading, writing books, enjoying my son growing up and spending time with him, classical music, concerts, travelling etc.
