Acidification refers to the decrease in pH levels of freshwater bodies due to the increased
presence of acidic substances, often from acid rain, industrial emissions (such as sulfur dioxide
and nitrogen oxides), or acid mine drainage. The normal pH range for healthy freshwater
systems is between 6.5 and 8.5. When the pH falls below this range, ecological and chemical
imbalances occur.
