The mother is one crucial archetype that can be inferred from behaviours and ideas that emerge and develop from birth onward. According to CG Jung, the patterning mother archetype generates certain perceptions in the child's unconscious so that a "mother" pattern evolves within the child's experience of reality. The archetype of the Great Mother as elucidated by Jung and Neumann is useful in understanding the wellsprings of Mother Mary's resonance through the ages and in reconsidering the figure in the contemporary imagination.
The concept of the divine mother in ancient cultures is revived and introduced in Christianity in the cult of Mary which first appeared in fourth century and got established by eighth century in Europe. The evolution of the Marian cult over twelve centuries has much to do with cultural transactions. Assimilations of local customs and practices into Marian devotion are quite common as evidenced by the present study.
